Meet: Dj Steph Honey
When asked to describe herself in a few words, Dj Steph Honey simply replied, “A Lover of Soca Music”. Born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario but now based in the 6IX, DJ Steph Honey is continuously making her mark in the Toronto party scene.
Well versed in the genres of Soca, Dancehall, RnB and Hip-Hop, DJ Steph has catered to events like weddings, birthday parties and many corporate gigs (Sephora, Nordstrom, Soho House, Under Armour, ect). She’s also made appearances at events that took place during Caribana and PRIDE Toronto.
Her DJ Journey started off on a whim that has now lasted over 6 years, “I started DJ’ing as a favor to someone who needed a female DJ for a corporate thing, and I knew I had a good ear for music. I enjoyed the experience and was curious as to how far I could take it… This was about 7 years ago.” Crazy, right? Sometimes all you really need to do is say “yes” and see where it takes you.
When asked if music has always played a significant role in her life, her response made it evident that it’s literally embedded into her DNA, “My dad is a DJ. So, music has always been a big part of my life. Soca has always been my favourite genre, followed by RnB and Dancehall”.
Her love for music and the freedom the job gives her with her time, is what inspired her to keep going. Being a DJ definitely has its perks!
We all know that the entertainment industry is known for predominantly being a “man’s world”, and women thrive in this industry by sticking together. Dj Steph has described her journey as a female DJ so far as “interesting”, because of all the bias and questions about a woman’s skills as a DJ. “To be honest, I don’t think about it too much. I know I am skilled and that I have reached this point for a reason. The little hurdles that may come up as a result of being a woman in a male dominated industry are just challenges to overcome, and an opportunity to open the door for upcoming female DJ’s to take up more space!”

As an artist, having inspirations is normal (if not essential), and instrumental as one grows as a creative. DJ Steph Honey personally has a few, and they’re nothing short of homegrown. “A lot of my DJ inspirations are local. Lissa Monet [Founder of “Luxe Life Sound”] comes to mind; As a fellow female DJ, she was able to carve a very special lane for herself in our industry. She is the creator of “That Slow Jam” party, which is an amazing experience and is now also part of her legacy. I’m a huge fan of Dr. Jay for pushing Soca music the way he does here AND internationally. Soca is the soundtrack of my life and I feel so lucky to be able to regularly see our artists at quality events thanks to him”.
One of the highlights of DJ Steph’s career so far, has been being able to open up for Soca superstar, Patrice Roberts, earlier this year. When asked where she sees herself in the next 5 years, she simply responded “I hope to be playing even more Soca events and regularly travelling to DJ”.
DJ Steph Honey has made an ode to keep showing up as her authentic self, all while continuing to show her passion to the people. Be sure to keep up with all of Dj Steph’s vibes HERE!
